advice please.
does a single mum have to pay tuition fees when doing a masters???
i know that when doing a masters you dont get any help as you would if you were doing a B.Sc. but does that 'no help' extend to the course fees as well???

Basically yes there is no help with course fees for postgrad courses except for funding opportunities provided by the university and research councils.
The fees for postgraduate degrees - including master's - are set by the university not the government which means they do not come under the remit of student finance. However, there is some funding available via the university and via the research councils. I, for example, was funded for my postgraduate dregree by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. The funding paid for both fees and living expenses; the university funding often pays for fees and living expenses too. In order to access this type of funding you have to apply for it via the university - be warned it is very competitive so you have to ensure your application - i.e. your research proposal/statement of purpose is excellent. This type of funding is generally awarded on merit not on circumstances unfortunately. Therefore, being a single mum does not help towards getting the funding. Don't let that put you off, ask your university what funding is available and apply for it.0 -
thank you very much for the brilliant information.xx0

Just to add that if you want to go to uni this Autumn then the dates for funding are either already over, or about to close. Most funding bodies award fairly early in the year.
Same goes for scholarships but I think you can apply later for your university bursaries. There are three types of people in this world. Those who can count and those who can't.0 -
Just to add if what you are thinking of studying is more vocational there is sometimes funding for that. Your best bet is to look at all the individual university websites and details of the courses you are interested in to see if anything is available.
In most cases being a single mum won't make much difference.0 -
thank you all - uni student help office are helping sort it. thank you all again.xxx0

It would depend on what your course is. All post-grad courses have fees set by their individual universities. What course were you ging to do.
Also if it's not a course where you can get a bursary, or grant from; you could also apply from a career development loan from a bank. The only downside is you have to start making repayments the month after you finish your course.0
