New PC Tips?

Hi

Well I have ordered a new Dell PC to replace my 8 year old one.

Whats the best way to transfer files and programs to the new pc like my address book, favourites etc.

Also is backing up to DVD's best or a portable hard drive?

Any other tips welcome.

you can use the Export facilty on Internet Explorer + Outlook express to transfer your Favs and address book

this will allow you to connect the old hard disk to the new one as a USB device

you just need to swap the strap from Master to Slave

then plug into the new PC and transfer any documents pictutes etc using "Drag and Drop"

I personally have a external hardrive which has all my files backed up.

New computer I just plug it in and trasnfer all software and files from there.

I have all my files quite well organsied and regualary backed up so they are upto date so find it the best way to do it.

If your old computer is running XP then the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard will do the job but it will not transfer application programs. I have used it several times and it has saved me a lot of time. You may have to add a few things manually so keep the old PC intact for a while.
    This article describes it https://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/deploy/mgrtfset.mspx

If you have lots of files then use a 1 gb memory stick if you can since lots of floppies will be a pain.
