Nesting Seagulls

A friend of mine had seagulls nesting in her chimney last year and someone told her recently they like to come back to nests year after year.

I know gulls are protected by the law but does anyone have any ideas as to what she could do to prevent them nesting again this year?

Thanks

didn't know seagulls are protected! anyway, can she not install a chimney cap or something to block their access before they arrive back?

  • Hi,

A lot of the houses round here have spikes on the chimneys for exactly this reason...

You are looking for something like this http://www.birdspikesonline.co.uk/Bird-Spikes/Bird-Deterrent-Spikes.aspx?source=goldladder_adwords&gclid=CPes_-CRjrYCFW_KtAod9R0Apg I haven't used this company, just googled "anti bird spikes chimney" to give you an idea what to look for. I have seen some houses with wire mesh wrapped over the chimney, not sure how effective that is though.

I think it is just any nesting bird you aren't allowed to disturb... rather than them being "protected" ...
  • Thanks for all the quick replies! Those spikes look like they may be the answer. I'll pass the link on to my friend.

Seaglls ARE protected. I had them nesting last year. Only the male has come back this year. He knocks on my patio door for food, and if I leave the back door open, he comes in and eats the cat food!
You can put spikes on the chimney, or netting, but you could ask the council for advice too.

All wild birds are protected now and you cannot disturb nesting birds.

Nesting seagulls are very protective and extremely vicious. Take care!

Yes the house a few doors down us always have them not only to they mess every where and squawk all hours especially in Summer they have been known to swoop down on kids trying to protect there off spring when they fly off the nest, kids were doing no harm also. People around here put spikes on roofs if it bothers them. I seen one house across round have spikes and they still come on chimney pipes
