Upgrading from Vista

Vista couldn't even complete a Cut/Paste operation properly.
I often move batches of folders between drives; when I select Cut and Paste, they should all move from one drive to the other. Vista didn't achieve this. It left some folders behind in the source folder - no error, no explanation, just seemed to forget about some of them.
This was the deal-breaker for me
And this is the classic example of what I mean when I say Vista is now a perfectly good OS with a rough start and resulting terrible reputation.
That problem was fixed in SP1.
Didn't help you back then, and I don't blame you for going back to XP or whatever it is you did, but for anyone using Vista today, it's a non-issue.0 -
what about upgrading to an OS which is more secure, better looking, faster, more stable, less intrusive and more flexible. Oh yeah free as-well. Id recommend trying ubuntu!
Just turned a non tech friend on it and he loves it. He is fine with Libre office which is free (MS office replacement)
all he uses it for apart from that is browsing the web, which he has found much faster than on windows. No internet exploder on Linux but that's not a bad thing.
things that will stop you changing are if you need a program that only works on windows. Also you wont be able to make a cup of tea in the time it takes your machine to boot0 -

!!!!!!, it shouldn't even have been a problem in the first place!!!
Moving files around is almost the most basic, fundamental thing that an Operating System does. How can anyone get it wrong?
I've just observed OH on a Vista machine copying a brace of photos from camera to HDD. That machine just exhibited exactly the problem I described - it only copied some of the selected files - no error, no explanation, just partially completed this most basic task. Apparently it does this regularly when copying.
That machine, according to the properties screen, is running Vista with Service Pack 2 .........0 -
I've upgraded a few PCs with Vista to 8. Very impressed with the upgrade process stability and speed. For £50 I'd say yes. Issues to check:-
1. do you have a backup Vista install disk
2. backup data
3. if you use Office2003 (Word, Outlook, etc) its not compliant with 8 (officially)
4. how do you access email? if its via the web then no issue; otherwise check what you currently use will work on 8 (some people have had usage issues with Windows Live Mail for example)
5. Plan for not having a Start button (there are a number of acceptable replacements). If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.0
