Applying for UK bank account if tax resident of another country

We live in France and are tax residents there, we are British citizens but have no property in the UK. When we bought our place in France we were able to open a French current account with no difficulty. At the time we owned a property in the UK.
We are having problems with our British bank and may want to change to another Bank in the UK. So far, we cannot see a way round the various questions by the UK banks about residency.
Does anyone know of a UK bank who would welcome us despite living and being tax resident in France?

Channel islands offshore account. You get a GBP account there which is virtually the same as a UK based account.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

Massive difference to an onshore account is that there is no FSCS protection.
Some of the Indian banks with UK branches have FSCS protection and can take on non-UK residents.0 -
Presumably something like this: http://www.res-non-dom.barclays.com/open-non-resident-bank-account/ would have FSCS protection if it was UK-based rather than offshore, wouldn't it?Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning0 -
Thanks everyone,
Benjus, the super irony of your post is that it is Barclays I would like to escape from. They are behaving appallingly after we were robbed on the Autopiste in Spain and frankly my view of them - the one time in our 50+ years with them when some help would be nice - is unprintable.
I realise now that one of the main criteria is the FSCS cover.
I'll spend some time looking at your suggestions and if I may, check with you later.0
