Problem with no claims and RAC insurance

I have been with the RAC for past two years and prior to renewal did a quote search on confused.com, I was saving £200 by switching. I put down that I had 5 years no claim bonus in quote and took out a policy with swinton, two weeks later I got a letter from RAC stating that I only had 4 years as they would not recognise a small gap I had between the two years I had with them!
Swinton now want another £76 off me, but when I did another search on confused.com using 4 years no claim, I found that swinton came out at £12 more expensive than original quote!
I called swinton and asked to justify the £76 and they said the Internet price is for new customers only and because I have been with them a month I would not be eligible! Anyone else been on this position and what did you do about it?
At the moment I am wondering whether to cancel policy and look elsewhere.

The £76 may well include an admin fee of up to £50 for making the change. Plus insurers will never like someone admitting that one of the declared facts was simply wrong, it makes them suspicious that others may have been "accidentaly" wrong too (its different from a change in circumstances).
You may cancel but that is likely to be much much more expensive as you'll have cancellation fees and a non-prorata way of calculating the premiums/ refund due
Re the root problem though, what do you mean by:I got a letter from RAC stating that I only had 4 years as they would not recognise a small gap I had between the two years I had with them
Its may be easier to tackle this than anything else0 -
I had a car insured for a year, sold the car, and there was a 3 month gap before I bought another car and insured that with the rac.
RAC claim that when I insured the second car I put down that I had 3 years no claim on the form - this is not true as I had the no claims bonus from the RAC and had phoned them back then to talk about the no claims discount in light of my gap and they said it was fine.0
