PSD states a immediate refund. Which at the very worst is close of play on the day you speak to them... Should be in effect as soon as you have made them aware.
Any longer raise a complaint with Nationwide, that they are in breech of PSD (payment services directive)

Is it worth a contacting a regulatory body to report this incident?

As you are well aware (You do work in a bank). A complaint has to go via nationwide in the 1st instance and if not resolved by them in 8 weeks. Can then be refered to FOS.

    From http://www.fsa.gov.uk/doing/regulated/banking/psd

The FSA is the competent authority for most aspects of the Payment Services Directive (PSD). The UK implemented the PSD through the Payment Services Regulations 2009 (PSRs), which came into effect on 1 November 2009.

However, I don't think an individual can complain to the FSA, so presumably it would be the normal complain to bank, deadlock or no resolution in 8 weeks, escalate to FOS.

I spent months trying to chase down money that was creditted to my account but not paid back. They kept saying it would be in my bank within 14 days and it wasn't. A recorded delivery letter to the complaints department and the threat of going to the ombudsman if they couldn't resolve it worked.
    Good luck x
