keyboard characters wrong how to fix plz

hi, can anyone tell me how to fix this keyboard problem of wrong characters. probably simple but ive just re formatted and re installed xp (traumatic experience) and i cant type an at sign from the at sign key i have to use the number 2 to get one, it seems muddled up.??? anyone know why plz?

go the the conrol panel and keyboards, add the English (British keyboard) and remove the american one. You been set to the US one by mistake!0

just tried that and there is no option to change the language... tried to update driver and it says i already have the most upto date driver..
