Eating Out Belfast City Centre

hi , i know there is a thread already on here, but i am meeting some friends in Belfast for a few drinks late afternoon on wednesday and having a bite to eat. They are coming up on the train and havnt been to Belfast for years.
For the life of me i cant think where to go ? somewhere nice but not OTT.i never really go into town for eating out but its handy for everyone .
The only place i can think of is Northern Whig. hoping to have a few drinks around 4 and then eat at about 5. will everywhere be empty as it is midweek.
We are all in our thirties........( just ) lol

The Apartment is nice for watching the world go by. I'm sure they serve food that early although not absolutely sure.

Benedicts was good when I went there (benedictshotel.co.uk), nice food, lovely surroundings and a vibrant bar downstairs (even midweek) playing live music later in the evening.

    Serves lunch all day apparently.

I go away a lot on business and it was a nice change to have somewhere vibrant to go!

Depends which station they're coming into. If it's Gt Victoria St and you fancy a 'bite' rather than a 'meal' (IYKWIM) then try Robinson's, The Crown (upstairs) or The Beaten Docket.

Of the three the Docket is (IMO) the best all round - food, service and price.

Surprisingly both the Europa and Jury's are also relatively inexpensive, with Jury's being very spacious.

Apartment - good quality and decent price
Deane's Deli - I reckon it's better than Deane's Brasserie and exceptionally good quality (although a bit more pricey than the others)
Queen's Cafe Bar in the Queen's Arcade used to be quite good and I hear it's been taken over by Deane's so might be worth a look.
    Cafe Vaudeville isn't bad either.
Life in this world is, as it were, a sojourn in a cave. What can we know of reality? For all we can see of the true nature of existence is, shall we say, no more than bewildering and amusing shadows cast upon the inner wall of the cave by the unseen blinding light of absolute truth, from which we may or may not deduce some glimmer of veracity, and we as troglodyte seekers of wisdom can only lift our voices to the unseen and say humbly "Go on, do deformed rabbit again.....it's my favourite". © Terry Pratchett in "Small Gods"

The apartment is lovely and we often dine there. I personally dont like benedicts much as I find the food very pub like. The basement at the side of the city hall is nice, its probably even nicer now they have brought the smoking ban in.
  • Just a thought - if they haven't been in Belfast for years, then you could do a touristy thing? If the weather's nice, you could all walk from Central Station, point out St Georges Market, go past the sheep at the Waterfront Hall, walk along the waterfront till you get to the big fish & the boat-tours, cross over & walk past the musical steps & dancing fountains & eat in McHughs (upstairs overlooking the fountains) or that fancy hotel round the corner. Not to far from the Whig or Taps2 either.

Taps2 on Waring Street (opposite the Merchant Hotel, just down the road from the Whig) does food at around 4pm and was very good when my girlfriend and I went there a couple of weeks ago.

If you or any of your friends smoke, Taps2 also has the advantage of an outdoor section where you can watch the world go by (most of those sitting outside were non-smokers when we went there anyway).

It's around £3 per tapas dish. We had three or four each and it was very filling. I recommend the patatas fritas (basically chips with lots of nice herbs and spices). The portion size was generous for those. The other portions were just about right to be able to taste something but without filling up on any one thing too much.

Opposite Benedicts there's a noddle bar called the "foo king".
I think it's about £9 for their "all you can eat" buffet.
