Temporary Drivers on Car Insurance

Rang my insurers yesterday to put my brother in law on my car insurance temporarily for a month. The chap I spoke to at Halifax said it would be £49 for the month but I could add him as a additional named driver on the policy for free which would cover him to the policy expiry date.
Whilst obviously pleased with this 'result' common sense says to me that as he is able to drive the car over a longer period of time there is potentially a greater risk to the insurer. Any ideas?
