Narrow cavity wall

Can anyone advise?
Salesman/surveyor came round yesterday and said I was eligible for free cavity wall insulation under the ECO scheme. I am not on benefits and not in a qualifying postcode but because my cavity walls are 49mm wide then I do qualify as they are "hard to treat cavity walls".
The work is to be carried out by Mark group and the estimate I signed is for £0.00.
Is this a con - when they come or just before do they then say it will cost more?
Thanks in advance.

It's not a con. Part of the Energy Company Obligation sets out to insulate as many "hard-to-treat" properties as it can identify. The two main types of hard to treat walls are solid walls and walls with a narrow cavity, which it appears yours is. You don't need to be on benefits to qualify.
  • I personally would make sure a bead was used in a 49mm cavity as fibre won't fill properly in a 49mm cavity. Mark group use a few less than scrupulous surveying outfits who are claiming properties are HTT when they aren't . These measures will eventually get inspected and then the crap will hit the fan as it has done before within the industry. The installer and the surveying company will be penalised not the innocent homeowner though. And I don't think the Mark group uses bead ?

Ofgem have released guidance for assessing narrow cavities, and they state that a chartered surveyor is required for the job. I think this guidance takes effect from May, not sure what any previous guidance stated, does anyone know?
