Need a voip phone for sipgate

Hi

I have signup and got a local number from Sipgate.
I have it working with a bluetooth headset and it works fine, but my headset is old and the battery is pants.

So i have been loooking for a voip phone but all of the ones i see say skype ready does this mean i cant use them with sipgate??

In another post some suggested getting a ATA
But i haven't got a normal phone,so i would need to buy a ATA and a phone:

my short list is
Olympia 9211 IP or Linksys CIT200

The Linksys CIT200 is Just under £30 at ebuyer using google checkout makes it around £20.00

Just need to know if it works with sipgate  money is well tight at the moment so i need to get it right

Any advise would be very welcome

Sipgate sell some hardware themselves, like a USB-connected phone for £14

I think you'd find more info and get more responses on the Phones Board
  • The Tesco internet USB handsets go really cheaply on Ebay or can be picked up new online for under £7.50 at http://buy.tescointernetphone.com/ with £5 call credit included.

Windows XP just sets these up as audio hardware and as such they still work on Sipgate with the Sipgate softphone application set to use them as the audio devices.

Personally I use Sipgate with one of these (link to item) and it rocks!

Thanks for that i have ordered the WRT54GP2 about a week ago from canada.

Getting by with a tesco's usb phone untill it turns up, used the credit to top up my voiptalk account(out going) and am using sipgate for my incoming calls.

Is the WRT54GP very hard to set up for sipgate? I heard you need a uk dialing plan.

As it will be set up for the us/canadian market?

    Many Thanks

The whole labelling of internet phones is very confusing, but I'll try to explain as best as I can.

Take the olympia Skype phone - very popular when it first came out, probably the most well known voip/dect cordless phone in the early days of consumer voip. This was truly a skype-only phone, as it was hardware locked not to work with other applications. This happened because you could not set the phone to work as a microphone within Windows, meaning you could not transmit sound through any other applications.

Most 'phones' work that way - by basically acting as a microphone with added functionality - you can configure them like you would a normal microphone, and they're compatible with any application which accept microphones - e.g msn, yahoo, and most of the voip applications including Skype. These are typically the handsets that say they're skype-ready, but also they usually say they work with msn and instant messaging.

to be honest most phones fall into the second category nowadays, so technically any usb phone you can find will work with your sipgate software. However, if you have the money to stretch, it's best to get a 'proper' SIP phone from the big manufacturers, sitecom, linksys, polycom, etc. These typically have the codecs built into the hardware, rather than relying on software on your computer to do the sound encoding, which give better sound quality. As they're also dedicated voip phones, they have greater functionality, and also a greater range of uses and connectivity.

But to answer your question, yes they'll work. BTW, if you want a free phone, nothing fancy but it's in the second category of phones, probably worth no more than £2.50, register for a free account at https://www.coms.com (or co.uk) then e-mail them for a free phone and they'll ship it in the post. You don't need to give card details or anything.
