Ex partner on old council tax bill,is he liable for half the debt?

Dont know if i'm really posting this in the best section but here goes.... I have for the past year been argueing a council tax bill I have.
The bill also has my ex partners name on, and as far as I was aware he was paying the council tax at the time, but obviously not!!
This is not the first debt I have had to pay off for him and I am getting fed up now! I have always aimed to be debt free and am getting fed up of getting the backlash of my ex partners problems.
I rang up my local council to see where i stand on the possability of them splitting this bill and sending a bill for half the amount to his new address. They finally agreed to send him a copy of the full amount as it had his name on aswell, but they told me if he chose not to do anything about it then they would just deem me liable to pay the full amount as I am the one who still lives in the property for where it was billed.
I set up a payment plan anyway and agreed to pay a certain amount each week with the use of a payment card. I am near to paying off half and wonder if anyone could shed any light on if there is anything I do to force the other half required onto him as i feel it is only fair!!!!! all comments welcome... thanks guys :)

Unfortunately as you are jointly and severally liable for CT the council can chase you for any unpaid debt. You cannot force the council to chase him for the debt. You can refuse to pay and then they will seek a liability order on you, and possible your ex and then charges will be added to the debt and bailiffs instructed. Bailiffs who have the power to seize goods or vehicles to cover the debt and these could be yours or your exes....
  • I've been in that situation, some men just walk a way and leave you with the lot. It's time the law was changed in this area

To be fair, it goes both ways.

You are both liable for payment of the full balance - if you stop paying the council may pursue your ex but they can just as easily come after you for the full remaining balance.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

    Why?

Its fairly clear that its a joint debt that they both went into at the start.

And well done on the sexism!

  • Yes i agree that its discusting they can just walk away from council tax debt!!! They could not do this with gas/electric bills for a previous address surely! So why should they be able to with this!!
I find it appalling that at 28 years old i have managed to avoid debt all my life, which has not been easy having four children yet i can land my self with some idiot who is up to his eyeballs in it and have to pay sums off for him!! And also when checking my experian report find myself linked to his bad debt!!! GRRRRRRRR
  • Why do people on here always look at any opportunity to state the bleeding obvious and have a go, of course it goes both ways and of course a woman can walk away too, for goodness sake, get a grip, either comment with a post that has some point to it and replies to the OP's post or go away with your silly remarks..............YAWN

sexist my a$$ not me, I can assure you :rotfl:
