New printer advice

I want to replace my HP Photosmart C7280 with a new printer.

The replacement would have wireless connectivity, also have the ability to scan and copy, no fax required.

I don't mind paying extra and have wondered about buying a lazer model, as they seem to work much faster working than ordinary models. The downside seems to be the cost of toner.

Basically the replacement should work quite quickly without all the grunting and groaning, stopping while it does something or other, which the Photosmart does excessively.

Wondering if anyone can recommend an efficient printer which works really well, and models to avoid.

Thanks for any help.

Th exact types of printing you need to do could help, for example, lasers don't do too well with photos but they manage with images which are included in documents

    Thanks for replying santer.

The printer is for home use only, documents, occasional coupon printing, rarely photos, just general home printing. Possibly averaging 5 to 10 items a week.

A mono laser (budget Samsung?) will do the job, and a fraction of the cost to run of an inkjet. Yes, the toner carts are more expensive, but they last many times longer. Keep the HP for use as a scanner, and for when you need 4 colour printing.
But given your minimal 500 impressions a year, it may not be worth it. If sticking with inkjets, I'd look at the Canon Pixma range.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Thanks very much for your advice macman.

Will check out the printers you've mentioned and look at their specs.

There are such a wide-ranging number of printers being offered, it's very difficult to know which to choose.

    Much appreciated.

    One option

Maybe use draft setting for anything you won't be sending to anyone and the other settings for letters and this will also cater for the rare photos

Laser versus inkjet, the laser is less prone to the ink clogging if left unused, as you print 5 - 10 items a week, printing them so the inkjet is used daily will help prevent ink clogging.

Thanks very much for the link santer.

The printer is certainly a very good price. Have saved the link and will have a good read of the spec.

Just become fed up of all the 'grumbling and groaning' from the Photosmart before it actually decides to print. Also it no longer seems to hold its network connection and we're having to use the lead to print.

    It has to go!

I run a cannon ip4850 with a continuous ink system (CISS) from cityinkexpress.co.uk. I produce about 100 A4 sized high-quality DVD covers per month, as well as printing the usual packing notes and labels for a wrestling company.

The cost of the CISS is minimal compared to cartridges, but may not be suitable for an all in one printer solution.

    Edit - More info,
cityinkexpress.co.uk do have CISS system for all in one printers.
From my experience of using cityinkexpress.co.uk I can recommend them, but Do Your Own Research.

Thanks very much for your recommendations nox, will look into this.
  • I'd recommend the Epson SX Series. The carts are interchangeable and cheap to buy replacements for. I have the SX445w (bought from Argos last November for about £60 and was even recommended it by some other users on this forum), and haven't been disappointed yet. Here's the Ink I use

It's all wireless too if that's what you need.

    Hope this helps :)
