    I think the OP is indeed referring to ledger balance and available funds. Most banks, including Santander will indeed debit charges regardless of the available balance as OPs say. I also agree that the uncleared cheque is a red herring. Sarahjohn needs to check her last statement for charges as Platterfish suggests - I bet it is all there somewhere..

    Sarahjohn - as an aside - if this is the first time you have incurred any charges (or the first time in a year) you may find that Santander is sympathetic to refunding them, or some of them. Check you previous statement and then give them a call..?
