new damson tree: is it dead?

  • I wouldn't start worrying about your damson tree yet... our 2 healthy established trees (one Shropshire Prune and one Merryweather) are still dormant. It does seem a little late this year, but with the cold snap I'm thankful of this - if the flowers get frosted off you don't get fruit.
Our trees are on an exposed site near Manchester, people in warmer areas will likely be earlier. Also trees can be shocked by being transplanted but will recover. I'd not worry until after mid-April.
    Happy growing,

hi - another daft question - there a leaf sprouting from the rootstock - so presumably that's a sign that the roots are OK - presumably I should pinch this off?

the leaf buds have started to angle further out and their purplish coat is broken with flecks of green....not dead! I'm so excited :D

    thank you all :)

(have now bought an apple tree to add to the fruit trees, and then I'd love a quince....and a weeping mulberry...maybe a medlar, and a cherry..............ho ho!)
