Video conversion / compression freeware

I am looking for some freeware to convert flash to MP4 and also to compress these files to a fraction of their former size (without affecting the quality too much)
Any suggestions ?

Handbrake
Their website is handbrake.fr/
but you might consider an older version http://www.oldapps.com/handbrake.php?old_handbrake=5
That version allowed you to specify the output file size, so you can decide for yourself the trade off of quality v size

another vote for Handbrake here, the newest version will convert a 1.6gb movie to MP4 in about 25 minutes on my laptop. Grerat for getting movies I own from elsewhere to play on the IPAD native.
There are a number of preset conversion profiles for devices/needs straight out teh box.

One vote here for Freemake video converter.
I've recently used it to convert around 80 drm free 4.5 gb dvd's to 1gb mp4 files.
Simple to use and can convert flash to mp4

Another option would be to use VLC player
