Laptop Problem

First off - I have read the sticky about checking for Malware and I will be following the instructions, but can't do that until the weekend due to time constraints so thought I'd set out my problem and see if anyone has any other suggestions.

I have a Asus laptop, which is about a year old, running Windows 7, with 4GB RAM. It is fully upto date with Windows updates.

Has been running fine until the last couple of days.

I've noticed a couple of time that when I Hibernate it, about 5 - 10 minutes later a Blue Screen comes up - unfortunately it shut down before I could get to fully read what the problem was.

Also, last night I chose to shut it down and this morning it was still sitting there with the "Logging Off" message.

Finally, when I start the computer up I sometimes get a dialogue box saying that it couldn't start net4.exe - is this some sort of nasty I've picked up from soimewhere?

The only recent change that I have made is I downloaded and installed Microsoft Visual Studio Express 2012 at the weekend.

I have a Dell laptop but the principal should be the same. On rare occasions the Dell will not switch off. I remove the battery, count to 20 and replace it then switch on as normal. You can then boot up in safe mode if needbe. Worth a try as it can't do any harm and may help. :)

You might also be able to force it to shut down by holding down the power button until it turns off.

Thanks for the replies. I am more interested in how to fix it though than how to turn it off as hold down the power button was what I had to do in the end.

It is still doing it - am unable to install Window updates at it spent all day yersterday saying it was installing update 1 or 28 and doing nothing.

I will follow the Malware guide later, but was wonder if there could be any other explanations.
