Just get the alignment fixed ~ mine was 8 pounds to get done last month. got to be cheaper and a whole lot less hassle than paying for another mot?

Last year my car went in for test with the headlight pointing too low (the accident repair specialists obviously were not that specialist) and came out with it correctly aimed, pass ticket and no mention of it ;)

Similar thing here, had both headlights replaced due to age of car last year, during MOT when tester checked them he said one was a little high, adusted it with a screwdriver which took less than a minute and that was that.

I suppose it depends on how difficult some cars are to adjust and how keen a garage is to fail the car.

If it were me OP I would take it to another a garage and ask them to check it, wouldn't expect them to charge for that and then at least you will know if you truely do have a problem.

A council test centre has nothing to gain by wrongly failing your car as they don't do repairs.

This is one of the biggest misconceptions about council run MOT centres. In my county the council owned MOT stations also offer garage services.

Think about it - the council owned MOT centres are to test their fleet of cars, vans, trucks etc - if they need repairs then they'll do them in house rather than pay the private sector.

Oh and in case you hadn't noticed, local authorites are on the bones of their ****s, therefore they're trying to bring in as much revenue as the private sector, so it's debateable that they are somehow more honest than your average independent MOT tester.

Just get them to adjust it. It's a very minor job which won't cost anything like the cost of another MOT test (which may even find other faults).

Regarding adjusting at the time of test, MOT stations aren't allowed to make adjustments during the test (some do anyway) but they are allowed to complete the test, fail it, make the adjustment and immediately issue a pass.

The idea behind that is that the MOT fail statistics are used for a lot of research purposes - including giving an idea of the pass rates of individual models - and need to be based on the condition of the car as it arrived for the test. So tweaking headlight alignment, or emissions etc, then issuing a first-time pass skews the statistics by potentially making that model look "better" than it really is.
  • it may not be as simple a using the screw on the lmp to adjust it, the knock may have hit the leveler out of its holder and now the OP mmay have to get to grips with some tight space and somesmall hand and some long nose pliers to get the aligneent adjuster back onto its holder.

if it was just a case of adjust a screw for the sake of a pass or fail the MOT center would have done it, if the light unit is damaged because of the knock they wont go into the lamp and fix it but fail it inform you what it failed on advise to go to a garage and get it sorted before 10 days are up.

OP give the MOT center a call and ask if the adjuster is broken and that why it failed as lights not level.

happened to my brothers old focus, and the garage said new lamp but i got my hands in with and hooked it back up and it worked fine after and hasnt dropped out again since.

So you think it is a coincidence that you pranged the car and they failed it because the light was out of alignment.

It would be a lot quicker and easier putting the car close to a wall and matching it with the other one.

They already put the car close to a wall thats what cause the problem :p
