Are you really comparing the maniacs who perpetrated the mass murder of million of innocent people with some school dinner ladies?

I'm not sure I can get too worked up about this. Having kids means you're part of the system, that people will want to be involved in their welfare, justifiably or not.

And why not? Make no mistake, obesity's an epidemic. It's a timebomb waiting to go off right in your children's faces. It's going to cost the NHS, and therefore taxpayers, billions. And who's going to stop it? Parents aren't hearing the message (not all of them anyway). Industry doesn't care. The government's too soft with all its talk of 'self-regulation'. So that leaves schools to push the rather unpalatable message - your kids are fat. Stop feeding them crap.

The system's simply not refined enough to sort the bad parents from the good so inevitably everyone gets targeted.

As more schools become academies the dinners are getting worse again, as they aren't required to follow the same guidelines on nutrition.

I don't really think dinner ladies (or teachers) have enough knowledge or training in dietetics to be making spot checks either.

I have to say that my son's school is an academy and the food they do is delicious, varied, balanced and locally sourced. My daughter's state primary is the opposite. I quite happily give him money for lunch whereas it's just wasted if I let her have it.

my daughters school is also an academy, their restaurant is fantastic, loads of healthy stuff, its all cooked onsite, and loads of choice. They do meal deals (a full hot main dish with veg etc plus a drink) or the kids can have a sandwich/baguette/wrap, pasta, salad, whatever they like really.

You've been lucky there then, but as academies the individual schools can make the decision now, some are bringing back the coke machines and the constant supply of chips. Some are even letting Costa Coffee set up franchises on the grounds!

I told one of the dinner Nazis at the primary school mine are at if I ever caught wind that she had screamed at my child in the manner I just heard her scream at a 6 year old girl I would rip out her tongue and strangle her with it!!!

It is disgusting how a lot speak to the children.. they should be flogged! They get away with it because the teachers don't care and the children don't report it back to the parents because it is scarily normal!!!

At my school it was Mrs Coggins.. by God that woman was a dragon.. we got a bit naughty occasionally and pulled faces at her retreating back... and one boy once flicked mashed potato at her which was very very funny... but very naughty..

  • The only thing I have had 'policed' was bags of Haribo - on the grounds that other children would be jealous and they were given back when the children were collected so fair enough. As long as there is a sandwich and a piece of fruit I don't see the problem with bags of crisps and the odd kitkat.

Can you name those putting in coke machines?

What's wrong with costa? They have 6th forms often with cafes- are you saying that no-one should drink coffee?

I don't disapprove of coffee on principle, but I don't think putting overpriced caffeine outlets in schools to make a profit off getting the children wired and hooked is particularly ethical or sensible.

We had a kettle in our sixth form common room.
