How long to repair appliance on guarantee

Our 4 month old Indesit freezer stopped working. An engineer came and told us he needed to replace a faulty part. We got a call the day after telling us that the part was not in stock and we had to wait up to 28 days in case the part is back in stock or else they will replace the freezer... They say this is in the guarantee contract.
Is it possible/legal that they leave us without a basic appliance for four weeks?? Shouldn't they provide us with a replacement or send a new one? Calling customer service can take up to 40 minutes, (20 of which is Indesit hard selling an extended guarantee!)
Anyone in the same situation or that may know the sale of goods act and that can help?
Should they at least extend our guarantee as we will have only had a functional item for 11 out of 12 months?
Thanks!

You need to talk to the retailer, your contract is with them and not indesit. Sounds quite harsh though.
