Arrived last night at Manchester Airport Terminal 1, Had arranged to phone for a lift whilst waiting for luggage to come through.
All phones have been removed from the baggage area, only phones now when you pass into the meeting area, calls from these phones are now 30p a go!!
Nice one BT, no wonder people are ditching phone boxes, What a rip off

I think 30p is the minimum charge from any phonebox so maybe it should be retitled

30p is Ok for a call (IMO). They need to pay for the upkeep and reapirs to the boxes; most people use a call box as a last resort, so the premium is not an issue.

Virtually everyone can now afford to have a mobile (£5, 2nd hand at a car boot), so the numbers are only going to dwindle even further.


BT has a major problem with robberies at the boxes, so it wants to convert a lot of boxes to emergency, CC and reverse charges only; at the moment this is being blocked. (Personally I think it's a good idea.

this is another one of those things where we get what we deserve...we want to have freedom to use the cheapest network, whether One Tel and similar or mobiles, yet still expect BT to flush money into a national network of loss making public call boxes. Personally I think a separate company should be set up to run this national call box network, funded by market-share proportions of all UK phone networks, including BT and the mobiles.
