They sold me a can of JOHNSTONES ANTI CONDENSATION and INSULATING PAINT for £58.00 hard earned pounds
I had used another brand before so new that in a few weeks my conservatory should be warmer but no it had no effect.
A complete wast of time and a rubbish finish at that!
So i called johnstones and asked them what insulating properties the paint had and if it had UK energy saving data. They said no they did not have the data and they did not understand it needed anything more than bba. I said the other major insulation paint brand has all data from the UK europe and accross the world which they were happy to send me once they new who i was. Their paint was tested to EN standards and refernces dating back 10 years for the UK alone.
I asked for a refund and they refused as they said there was nothing wrong with the paint.
How sick is that selling paint as Insulating and charging for it but not having any energy saving values and then not giving my money back.
DISGUSTING DO NOT TRUST THIS COMPANY and incidentaly they are called LEYLAND Paints also.
I will be writing to the trading standards, claiming for my paint and my advice get the proven insulating paints from people who have been around. So Tried and tested instead of rubbish from Johnstones.
THIS PAINT IS STILL ON SALE !!!! STILL MAKING FALSE CLAIMS.
If the MD of Johnstone leyland is reading this get a grip man!!!! STOP MAKING FALSE CLAIMS Insulating paint MY butt!!

I find it surprising that any paint can have any real insulation properties
I'm not really surprised they wouldn't refund either - as you've used the product & they didn't claim any particular performance standard that you can show it doesn't meet.
Lesson to be learned I would have thought is if you want to ask such questions ask them before you buy or use the product.0 -
Some paints are [nanotech] treated with creamic microspheres which they claim is supposed to reduce thermal conductivity. Its more snake~oil utter garbage but whilst the laws in this country allow the advertising and selling of it, it will continue. Complain to the [ASA] Advertising Standards Authority.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. I suspect the problem in bringing these people to task will be that any paint will increase insulation by about 0.00000001%.;)0

- 100% evidence by customer testimonials - 0% scientific proof
- but the gullible public believe it and buy it
- some reading this will know I'm a fan of 'nano' insulation
- a thickness of paint as Cardew point out can contain no air pockets and is not loose cell
- nano-paint, like nano-marmite will work if it has sufficient thickness and applied to internal walls
- nano-paint, like nano-marmite will work in reverse if it has sufficient thickness and is applied to external walls
- the widely available 'thermalmix' which contains the ceramic microspheres used in paint is useless in paint thickness
I don't think defeating them is difficult at all, I rather suspect no one has tried. At least a 1/4 inch to have any measurable coefficients. Loose fill works and closed cell doesn't. Nano will help overcome the close fill 1/4 to 1/2 inch obstacle but won't begin to touch paint thickness.
They claim 0.06W/m.K which is the same as palm fibre, coconut fibre and sugarcane fibre. These tests however are usually 51 mm thick, 254 mm square test specimens. So as above if the paint is in this case 1/4 inch to 2 inches - it might just register on the thermal conductivity range for building thermal insulation.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. Placebo effect. You think it's warmer, so it is.
But of course, you can't label it "This is a placebo."0 -

The trouble is that (as the OP says) some of these companies tell out and out lies. Several years ago one company selling this "paint" claimed that this stuff was "Energy Star" approved.
They were told to stop by Energy Star in the USA, they continued, until they were threatened with being sued in the US Courts - they stopped !0 -
I agree with all the posters, its a garbage claim, this advert prices 10 litres of Johnsons Thermapaint Insulating Emulsion at £56.67 .A small living room of 13 square meters a litre and giving that room 2 coats would be a total of 6.5 litres of paint.
So repainting a room with a nice new finish with the added bonus gain of thermal insulation means in a sentence that people could insulate a whole room and ceiling for around £30 instead of the £450 & fitting costs for battening out and standard insulating panels plus the £30 quid it would cost you for cheepo paint from B&Q.
10 or more years since its invention, if it worked the whole soddin world would have used it, and still be using it. Johnsons would certainly have it writ big in their [NBS] National Building Specification Clauses, but it doesn't even rate a mention - its one more snake~oil product.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. You need to read the details of this particular product, not a different one supplied by a different supplierA white, water-borne paint which provides a thick matt coating for interior surfaces. Reduces condensation by insulating the substrate and absorbing an amount of the condensed water and releasing it back into the atmosphere over time. Prevents unsightly staining due to condensation runs.
Key Benefits:- Reduces condensation by absorbing the condensed water and slowly allowing it to be realised back onto the atmosphere
- Can be used on most interior surfaces, after suitable preparation and priming

What product did you use previously that miraculously made your conservatory warmer? :huh:0 -
Do Johnstons manufacture a paint that claims to be insulating?
Thermapaint appears to be manufactured by different company claiming to reduce heat loss by up to 20%
Thermopaints insopaint claims up to 25% u-value of 0.25W/m2kThe world is not ruined by the wickedness of the wicked, but by the weakness of the good. Napoleon0
