JSA = Tax

Is JSA taxable?

If JSA is £71.00, is that what's paid, or is tax deducted, i.e. less is paid?

I was unemployed for 6 months, I've now received notifaction I owe £200.00 from 2010, due to not paying tax whilst earing JSA :doh:
I'm hopeless with technology, in addition, I suffer with MH issues, what may appear simple, I struggle with, may I ask, please be patient, thank you

    Both types of JSA are taxable, not just contribution based.

  • No all JSA is def taxable as it is income - But it would only be taxed at end of year if your income is over the personal allowance for the relevant year. Current year is £8105 and next year will be £9440. So for the OP if their income for this year is less than PA then it will not be taxed.

    My tax code for 2013/14 was 9440, but is now 865L

    I owed £152 from 2010/11 tax year due to not paying whilst receiving JSA (whose fault is that?)

    When I registered for JSA, I handed my P45 over on the day I became unemployed.

    It's all very confusing :mad:

    You do not pay tax while on JSA you are more likely to be due a tax rebate. To get any idea of what happened and whose fault it may have been you need to give full details of everything for that tax year. Tell us what jobs and what periods of JSA you had, the dates they started and finished, what you earned (or recieved on JSA), full details of P45s gross tax (include section they appear in) dates (if two lots of gross/tax then give both). Any tax rebates recieved either during or for that year.

    It is partly your fault and HMRC have now added your P45 income up along with your JSA paid for the 2010/11 tax year - are you still claiming JSA? If so they will not be able to collect it from you unless you have a job where that notice of coding can be applied for the next tax year as it has taken them this long to get your income figures together and deal with them. Or if you prefer you could ask to pay it off in one go via a payment slip and not have it taken out via wages - that is always an option. My OH has a pending underpayment for this year buit we cannot deal with it yet as his last employer has to file his year end returns first and that can take a while.
  • It is partly your fault

    How can it be my fault?
    are you still claiming JSA?

    No, I only claimed for about 3 months during 2010.

  • What you could have done when you had your final income for that year was to contact them and ask for a coding adjustment for the year just gone and it would have been out of the way sooner. I did only say partly and I meant very slightly - they could have charged interest on the underpayment.
