Car diagnostic computer to diagnose warning lights

            Hi everyone,
Many (belated) thanks for your helpful replies - I'm going through the options people have recommended.
Fortunately I found a place who read and reset it for free (Kwik Fit as it happens!). Still haven't fixed the underlying problem yet but was really surprised to find out that apparently if you have any lights on your dashboard that is now an MOT failure (GULP!) - MOT was up at the same time-ish the light was on, so very pleased KF were able to clear it so it could get through the MOT!
We do have an android phone so will look into that option as it sounds very handy - how does it link to the car's computer and can you wipe the code yourself? Many thx again.0

You can relax, this simply isn't true.0

The way I read it about warning lights and MOT failures is that some warning lights on, will result in failure but not the engine warning light.
The warning lights that will now result in failure are:
 1. Electronic parking brake light
 2. ESP light
 3. Headlamp main beam light
 4. Electronic power steering light
 5. Brake fluid level light
 6. Seat belt pre-tensioner light
Again, nothing about engine management light.0

Not at all wishing to hyjack this thread ........ But I have a VW that has always had either Shell, Sainsburys or Morrisons diesel in it. But 3 weeks ago I put 3/4 of a tank (to fill it up) of Tesco diesel in it ......... After a few days I noticed it was not running the same (missing , loss of power accelerating) Cruise control ERR came up on the dash and now the orange engine light is on ! Car was serviced by a VW dealer a month ago and has done around 45,000. Going to get it into garage this week to sort it out. A coincidence (Tesco Diesel) or just a sensor playing up ?
I have read many threads on cheap fuel etc but logic tells me many other people filled up that day !

Use all the tesco diesel up and fill up with another fuel and see if its cured. If it is then dont use tesco diesel.
If it doesnt then you have another issue.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0

So I didn't manage to use all the Tesco diesel as another light came on the dash board and the car went into limp mode. Took it into the local VW garage and it has now been fixed. They changed the DPF and a couple of sensors all under warranty as the car is just less than 3 yrs old. There was no mention either by me or the dealer about using supermarket fuel. Funny as well no mention of doing short trips or taking it out for a good run to clear the soot from the DPF.
Well done VW warranty and I think I will avoid Tesco diesel just in case.
