The Portage service for under 5s Dorset area Special needs care.

Just to let everyone no there is a service called the Portage service a home visiting service for under 5s who have special needs. The portage service helps parents/carers in there childs development.
What portage does Weekly home visits by a trained home visitor.
Weekly written teaching activities designed for each individual.
Teaching and recording carried out by parent and carer.
Weekly supervision of the home visitor.

Who can have portage?
If you live in Bournemouth area who has a child under 5 years.
If your child has a signaificant development delay in more than one area, or a reconised syndrome.
If your child attends less than three preschool sessions a week (half day).

There adderess is Dorset house 20-22 christchurch road.

I am currently on a waiting list for my son, but they seemed to be very helpful.

Portage teams are often attached to Surestart Children's Centres as well.

Portage exists in many areas now, our local nusery is the base for one of the nursery asistants

Just to add I work for Portage and there are portage services all over England. I attach a copy of their web page which will help you find a service near you if you need it.

Generally speaking working with children aged 5 and under who have special educational needs anything from Speech and language difficulties to ASD, Down Syndrome. A truly excellent service.

spud was on the waiting list but by the time they had a space for him he was attending nursery for 3 days a week or more - but they allowed him to go to the social gathering once a month while he was on the waiting list, it was like a mother and toddler group but everyone there was having portage or waiting for it so there were no disapproving parents - everyone understood that some children can behave badly purely because another child brushed past them etc.
