Are we not forgetting that the item MUST BE OF MERCHANTIBLE QUALITY(ie fit for purpose) to expect a satnav to only run on half an hour of battery clearly does not conform to the above, therefore the store IS liable as the contract of sale is between them and buyer NOT THE MANAFACTURER. However Having said that, the immediate right to refund does not stand IF the store will replace, repair(without inconvenience)or offer a suitable alternative,

New European guidlines will be coming into force in the UK that the manafacturers guarantee will have to be increased from a minimum of 12 months to a minimum of 24,also the vendors will have more responsibility to ensure the goods they sell are fit for purpose,if not then an automatic refund MUST be given unless the buyer accepts other.

these consumer rights are in force in other EU countries and will come in here within 24 months.

    so no longer CAVEAT EMPTOR

  • I purchased a laptop from Currys in March 2005. They repaired it within warranty but when it went faulty outwith the warranty they initially refused to even though it was only just outside - and it was the same fault. I emailed:

    customerservice@dsgiplc.com
    peter.keenan@dsgiplc.com - CEO
    geoffrey.budd@dsgiplc.com - Company Secretary

And they eventually put me in touch with someone in their legal team who arranged the repairs. The laptop went faulty five or six times again until I decided to purchase a new one this year - from PC World.

I'm suing Currys for the cost of the replacement and a little compensation for the inconvenience.

As someone said, the service they provide is poor. I've also had to call their PR director on his mobile as they were ignoring me - his details are on their website btw ;) - he put me in touch with "executive customer service" who offered £400 as settlement. I rejected and await my court date.

Thats the reason I asked but then again my charger for my PDA comes apart and uses the 2 prong UK version and would fit in the box no problem. Also the Charger I actually got for the NANO comes with 4 interchangable heads and the box is only slightly bigger.. I could get the UK version in no problem.. There are currently 2 versions of the chargers and car chargers on the market all of various sizes.

Also... Never actually seen the retail box before I purchased it as they had to go get one from the back and then took it up scanned it and handed it to me in a plastic bag .. all without me touching it..

OK just got a Phone Call from my CURRY's store.. CS had been on to them to get this sorted... It also turns out I have been given old stock.. When I explained everything to the CS about the packaging they got on to CURRYS and told them. The one I got came in a black box with the IPOD, Earphones, usb cable and docking adapter all seperate... It seems they all come in the one package now. The manager was very nice this time and has asked me to take it down for a refund or an exchange. They are even going to throw in the armband pouch for free for the inconvenience.

Is this true... Are there more than one version of the NANO???

I think the lesson to be taken from this is...don't buy from currys. Infact today my speakers for my computer have gone up the duff i've had them for 8months. I bought them from amazon. I emailed them earlier today, got an email 30 minutes later saying i can either have a refund or replacement its up to me and i just have to send the item back, and they'll ask refund any postal charges aswell.

Its happened before with another item of mine and i never had a problem with them - top stuff :)

Compare this to currys/dixons/pc world

You're totally right. Not only are their prices usually comparatively uncompetitive but their customer service is terrible. On the other hand Amazon's does seem to be out sourced to India or somewhere BUT their policies are unduly generous and they genuinely seem to care about keeping the customer happy.
