I'm in the process of making a claim with M&S, can anyone confirm that when they originally took out their policy you could pay extra for no excess. I was blatantly told that M&S have never done a policy like that and I know when I took out my pet insurance i paid extra for that privelledge. Also is the excess per year or per claim? thanks in advance

It should say in your policy documents how much excess you agreed to pay. If you no longer have your documents, are they available online (can you log in or anything?). If not then I'm not sure if you'll be able to prove it if you don't have it in writing.
I'm with M&S and I thought the excess was a set amount - I have to pay £70 per illness.

There used to be a zero excess option. I was with them for years but their fees were going up a lot and they removed the zero excess so I moved a few years ago to another company. If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!0

Excess is per condition per year.So each condition will require a separate exces in any insurance year.0

Some insurers allow you to set an excess over and above the compulsory one they have already set.
So if they have an excess of say £70, you could potentially lower the premium by setting a further excess of another £70, making a total excess of £140.
Or you could just select £0 further excess and then still have only the original £70 excess in the event of a claim. Maybe this is how the confusion arose?
Verbal information from insurers can never be depended upon unless it's backed up in writing.0 -

M&S had a zero excess at the time I used them as I mentioned earlier in this thread. Back in the good ol'days when my vet didn't want all the money upfront, they would process the claim to M&S who paid every penny and I didn't have to pay anything either as there was no excess.
I think their underwriter changed and this led to the changes that made them like every other insurer. If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!0 -
My old M&S poliscy had zero excess. So they did them some time ago.
Switched to Argos Platinum as M&S was hiking up too much every year.
Then switched 5 cats to PetPlan and left 1 cat and a dog with Argos Platinum as they had pre-exisiting so could not switch, would lose the cover.0 -
mine had zero excress for the older cats and this was 2006-7 if that helps at allMad Mum to 3 wonderful children, 2 foster kittens and 2 big fat cats that never made it to a new home!
Aiming to loose 56 pounds this year. Total to date 44.5 pounds 12.5 to go. Slimming World Rocks!0 -
I thought that was the case. Lady on the phone told me M&S never had that type of policy. Shouldn't they informed you of the change (or was it on the new policy that i didn't notice) As mine was an continuation of an existing condition they have agreed to pay for the medication so am i correct in assuming i will only need to pay the excess once per year.
Unfortunately i can't switch as my dog has two pre-existing conditions for cruiciate (both back legs), at the time i had premium cover which classed each leg as a separate condition (fortunately) but when my last renewal came it was almost £1000 per year so i had to reduced it. I'm glad I didn't move because now at least they will cover the meds for a time at leastIn love and light :A0 -

Hi Sharloid, my policy was originally taken out in 2005In love and light :A0 -
I've just found some receipts for the two ops that my dog had in 2007/2008 and both times no excess was taken prior to full payout. Just makes me wonder if they should have written separately and prior to us renewing the policy because i can't remember ever receiving anything. Anyone have any thoughts on that?In love and light :A0
