Making jeans last longer - any advice?

Hi

I work from home so I wear jeans a lot. I love the dark denim ones but find that they dont last very long - even washed inside out with liquid rather than powder.

The last pair of skinny jeans I bought just before Christmas are looking really tatty now. Am I buying the wrong jeans in the first place? Does anyone dye them when they fade and does this work? Any other tips for just getting more moneys worth out of your jeans?

Or maybe I should ditch the jeans altogether and wear something else?

Make sure you used washing powder/liquid for colours.
    Wash inside out.
    Do not use clothes softener.

I still wear mine faded or not until they fall apart! I do need a couple of pairs of new ones though for smarter wear. I dyed a pair of black jeans with black dye - they came out really well (they are currently my smart jeans!) but the dye cost more than I anticipated and somehow although the washing drum looked clean after (followed the instructions correctly) the next couple of washes had little black flecks on clothes. This may be something to do with my machine possibly ?? but just mentioning as it happened to me and has put me off dyeing again.

edit: also I buy reasonable quality jeans, not expensive but not the really cheap makes eg M&S in their outlet store and they seem to wash and keep their colour better.

I agree with all of the above :) I try and buy a slightly better quality pair of jeans (but I try to get them from the charity shop :money:) - I particularly like Next and Gap jeans. I do wear them to death, as I practically live in them. However, if I don't kill them (i.e. put holes in them) I'll dye them (especially black jeans - I don't like grey ones :)) I get dye from Home Bargains - I think it's £2.99, so cheaper than Wilkos. However, I noticed with the last dye that the dust particles from the dye spread everywhere, but I couldn't actually see it - until I wiped the kitchen work surfaces down  - it was a bit of a mess! (Oh well, excuse for a spring clean - I certainly wouldn't have done it otherwise :o). After I'd wiped the kitchen down, and again, I ran a rinse cycle on the washing machine, and then ran an empty 40 wash with a capful of bleach in it. Then I ran another rinse cycle. And because I'm paranoid, the next load of washing was a coloured load of OH's work stuff :). So I didn't have problems with black flecks in the washing - just black flecks all over the kitchen, which striped when wiped!
