Econ 7 meter issue, what to do
Options
Hi all
Me and my lovely wife moved into our flat 2 months ago, we have found out we are one econ 7 meter. We were not told by our landlord or agent, in fact they dident even give a meter reading for the night meter.
Any how I have changed firms from eon to coop as eon were very dear and wouldent even offer a econ 7 rate.
The issue is that our boiler and storage heater which comes on between 12-am 7am uses so much power, it using 35 units a night and we were told by landlords electrician who were sent by the agent that we shouldent turn off the boiler and heater and let it run each night as thats how it heats up. problem is its costing to much, I have now fire them up for 2 nights a week as when they are heated up they last for days.
There is also been a issue with the meter not switching over from day to night and not powering the boiler and storage heater up which was fixed by the electrician, my bill is to much due to poor comunication and advise from the landlords agent which has cost me deer. 2 months of electric on night meter using 40units a night on top of the 8-10 used during the day.
also eon had me on 22p a unit from last tennant (god knows how he paid it)
0.22pkw the system has been draining around 50kw a day im working out £330 a month !!!!
I have now changed supplier and have to rates and only run the system twice a week
now im using 70units a week on night meter(7pkw) (turning on twice a week) and around 56 day units (12pkw)
Around £12-£14pw (£56pm)
Anyone have any advise on what i can do and what my rights are for poor advise from landlords agent
many thanks

You are on a deemed contract with the existing supplier from the minute you sign the lease. Its your responsibility to take meter readings and to understand both the readings and the tariff and how to use the heating.
You are on E7 at 7p cheap rate and 12p core rate and no standing charges. You have a storage heater and have water heating both come on at around 12 midnight for 7 hours. Is that correct ?
Until we know what heating and lifestyle you have, I'm not sure how to help other than your starting point is to have at least 30% of your usage on the cheaper night rate. Standing charges or no standing charges the rate is about the same, but an online e-account with direct debit and supplied meter readings every month will always get you a better tariff.
- what exactly do you use for space heating, only 1 storage heater ?
- how and with what do you 'heat water', what do you mean by 'boiler' ?
- does anyone ever 'have a bath'
- does everyone only ever use an 'electric shower'
- or is the shower 'immersion heater' powered
- what exactly is the name of your tariff, and what is your postal area
- which electricity company are you with
- are you cheapest tariff / e-account / direct debit / supply meter readings monthly etc
Go to your online account, get your actual average kW per day use, your region code, your tariff name, and let the group know. This year the going average rate per annum for a warmish all electric property is about £1200pa, your is running currently at £672pa or half the annual average. You must take into consideration that 60% of your whole annual space heating costs will be eaten up by 30% of the cold calendar days per annum.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. All suppliers automatically put any new customer on the standard tariff, it's the customer's responsibility to ask to go on a more appropriate one. Electricity is much more expensive that has for heating and hot water, so if you are used to gas you may have to drop what you think is an acceptable temperature.
Why are you trusting the agent read your meter, why didn't you do it? Are you sure you are not paying for the previous tenant's energy or the vacancy before you moved in?
What do you mean "boiler and storage heater", do you mean the immersion heater (electric hot water)? Or do you mean the bulky storage heaters that heat each room too? If you don't have storage heaters what sort of space heating do you have?
If you have storage heaters these do usually stay on for much or all of the night, that is correct. But you reduce how much power they draw by adjusting the input on each individual heater. If you want the heat to last all day you reduce the output.
If you are not sure what these are please look at pictures, there is loads of advice how to get the best from storage heaters and immersions on Google.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0
