Car insurance - what's the definition of unemployed?

I've been looking for quotes for my car insurance renewal and the price varies enormously as to whether I'm employed, unemployed or a 'house person'. At the moment I'm a temp with an agency but there's no work available but they have my P45 and I'm not signed on. I'm 64 so I don't yet draw the state pension but I have private pensions that I draw. I just potter about all day. So what am I as far as insurance companies are concerned? Unemployed? Retired? a houseperson?

A good guide is do you sign on/claim JSA, if you do then you are unemployed.

At 64 and drawing a pension I'd go for retired but you'll have to notify them (and likely pay a fee) if you do pick up some work from the agency

I think if you said 'houseperson' you may not be covered for commuting, so if you do get work you may be in trouble.

I'd be inclined to go for part time retired as first occupation and part time office admin (Assuming it's office work) as second occupation in that order.

Then ring the Insurer you interested and explain your situation and ask if they are happy the way you've declared it (Most will). Make a note of the persons name and the date and time of the call.
