Legal music downloads

  • Has anybody had problems with tracks downloaded from Wanadoo? I've been using them for ages, but they changed to a "new and improved service" a couple of weeks ago, and since then I've been unable to playback, let alone burn, tracks I've purchased from them. In media player, it states "acquiring license" along the bottom, then a pop-up box appears and tells me I've acquired the maximum number of licenses allowed - without even being able to listen to the tracks once!

I've contacted Wanadoo's music club about it and interestingly got 2 replies from different people there: The first said that there must be a problem with my Windows Media Player not acquiring the full licence, and I was to download media player again (tried this - same problem happens). The second person said it appeared "the license failed to download with these tracks from the outset" and that they would refund me??!!!

I was already confused, but 2 replies giving competely different advice has left me totally stupmed! Can anyone shed any light...?

LincsLad - The problem with ***site name removed by Fran *** is that noone is really 100% sure whether it is legal or not. They are acting round a loophole in Russia, but if you check the FAQ on the website it states that this does not mean that it is 100% legal to download from other countries. I make no judgement whether in the UK it is legal or not, that is a matter for lawyers, however I think you would have to agree it is a grey area at best.

Regarding your specific post, whilst I'm sure you would not intentionally condone illegal activities the word the board guide used is "Potential". I believe that until there is 100% clarification that this site is legal in the UK then we have to take the cautious approach to both protect the site and our posters.

Sorry, but while I understand what you say, it doesn't really answer the question. In summary:

    • I made a post criticising Tesco online's DRM, as it did not allow me to play the music I had purchased on both my home PC and my PDA - the main reason I purchased it in the first place.
    • I surmised that while legal sites continue to have such crappy DRM in place, it would only push people towards less-than-100%-legal download sites.
    • I mentioned *** site name removed by Fran *** and referred people to another thread where the subject was already being discussed.
My post was then deleted, and the person who deleted it included the same link to the other thread discussing *site name removed by Fran *** and other sites.

If I have transgressed by mentioning ***site name removed by Fran ***, then fine. But I really would like to know WHY my post was deleted when the person who deleted it is allowed to point people to another thread on the same subject, using the same link contained in my post. It smacks of double standards and I really would like the point addressed.

    *Boardguide comment:

I deleted your post because it said:

    "
Buying an album legitimately (as most seem to suggest it is) from *** site name removed *** for around $1.30 or so is never going to be beaten by the 99p per track rip-off which is itunes and similar."

There have been many posts/threads referring to this site which have been removed because it is a grey area which has been stated many times on this board.

Please respect Board Guide and Abuse Controllers' decisions. If you have a problem with a deletion, please contact the Abcons and discuss it off the board. Thanks

The logic that I cannot follow here is that you deleted my post "promoting" *site name removed by Fran ***, and then gave out a link referring people to another thread on these boards telling people about *** site name removed by Fran *** and detailing how to download music from there.

I can respect most decisions; double standards I cannot.
