Cells problem in Excel

Options
Hi all

I need to be able to stretch and narrow columns in Excel without affecting the rows above the part of the sheet I'm working on at the time - everytime I adjust the column widths it seems to do it for all the rows in that column.

I want different widths for different rows so that I can make things fit in properly.

Any help apprecaited

Thanks
L

Column width is exactly that; the width of the column. It can't be different sizes for different rows within the column (for a start it'd be quite difficult to keep track of which cell was in which column). The only way I can see round this might be to merge the cells to make longer cells in the rows above.
  • Have you tried freezing the panes? Unsure if this'll work, but try merging the cells after freezing the info above the column which needs formatted.

This is your answer in a nutshell, alternatively better planning or using multiple sheets.

If you want to do this because the data on the next column along is sitting over the top of the original column then using wrap text in format cells will automatically enlarge the row height to accommodate your cell data.

If I'm barking up the wrong tree with what you're after here, then, as the other members have said, the only way to do it is to merge the cells (that's the icon that looks like a football field with an 'a' in the middle on your format toolbar).
