Car Insurance for 2 - 3 months

I've after some advice.
My husband is about to accept a new job working 40 miles away which will mean we will need to get another car.
I've just renewed our insurance on our main car for the year. For the second car, I can insurance & tax my brother's 11 year old car (which is in my parents' garage as he's travelling for a year) but we ideally want to get a newer car as hubbie will be doing circa 25k mileage for the new job.
Ideally I only want to insure my brother's car for a couple of months whilst we wait for the new car (8 weeks at least). What is the best way to do this? I've looked at temporary cover sites but they are only 1-28 days where as if I took another year's policy and then cancelled it I could get stung with "admin" charges.
Or can I insure my brother's car then swap the details to the newer one when we get it?

You can do a change of vehicle but there will probably be an admin fee to pay (though often cheaper than cancelling). If the vehicles are going to be fairly different from each other check the insurers prices on both cars (if its a broker ensure its the same underwriter for both quotes)
You may be able to add your brothers car to your existing policy as a Temporary Additional Vehicle but again with admin fees this may not be the cheapest way.0 -
As above the admin charges for taking a 12 month policy and then changing the details over maybe less than a short term policy.
There maybe an issue with the car not being owned or registered to your husband. Some insurers dont like that.
You may find it cheaper to put the car in his name, But that adds to the number of keepers.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
