Offered a collegues old iphone 4s, he is currently on an o2 sim, but thinks his phone is unlocked - how do we tell?
Tried googling it, but all that i can find are 1001 ways to unlock teh phone
help appreciated as always

You tell by putting a non-O2 sim in it.
Most iPhones are sold unlocked but self lock to whatever network of the sim first inserted into the device.
There is no true way to unlock an iPhone because, surprise surprise, the lock is controlled by Apple. That said, if he is out of contract then its a quick call to O2 who notify apple that the phones to be unlocked and it is done within a couple of days (officially - mine was done in a few hours).
Any other way of "unlocking" is actually via jail breaking the phone which is a fairly extreme response -v- a quick call.0 -
I used to have a contract iPhone with O2. Even though my contract was for 24 months, they unlocked it for free after 12 months. So tell your colleague to speak to O2 and see what they say.0
