Advise on recent break in.

Hi, if anyone can help I would really appreciate it.
My flat got broken into the Friday just gone 15/03/13. Several things were taken to the value of around £800. There was no forced entry on our door and locks, this was confirmed by the police, as a result of this I can not claim on my insurance. The way I see it I should hold my Landlord responsible. The police suspect that who ever broke in had keys and we were actually told that the previous occupant did a runner after not paying several months rent.

As landlords go I don't think he would do that. I know we like to think were good judges of character though.0

1st thing - if you haven't already done so - get the locks changed ASAP. If it is someone with keys, they could well come back again.
The previous occupants sound like prime suspects. Have the police contacted your landlord for the name of the previous occupants?
When you say you can't claim on your insurance - have they told you this as a result of reporting this particular incident?
Seems unfair to me, it's not like you left your door unlocked, or a window open or anything, but insurance companies can be like that sometimes. Check the small print. Even if there is a clause, I would be inclined to go through their complaints procedure. I'm sure there are various ways of breaking into a property without leaving signs of force - e.g. an expert locksmith might be able to pick a lock.0 -
Some insurers have an endorsement for "forced or violent entry" for theft claims for rented properties (and other circumstances). Check your policy schedule.
It sounds like the police should be looking to talk to the previous occupants and get your locks changed asap.0 -
