I am wondering if it is possible to have either
a) A button on your shop web page that launches the potential customer's MSN with your correct MSN ID already in it or
b) A web page with a chat window in it that talks back to your own MSN.
Any suggestions?

Brilliant! No amount of Googling that I tried unearthed this little bit of script. Just tried it, it works great from IE (though not other browsers it seems). I have put it on our B&B in China site for now.

I'm using Ubuntu right now. which doesn't have IE or MSN Messenger. I tried clicking one of those msnim links in Firefox and it opened a Gaim window with the MSN Messenger address ready to messege

Interesting. I tried it with Firefox 2.0.0.3 on 2 different computers and each time get: "Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (msnim) isn't associated with any program".
Maybe you could try the script I just added - link is halfway down www.bb-china.com

I'm back in Windows now and the Firefox here can't open it.
i just checked and found out that Gaim adds the URI handler msnim: which is why Firefox knew how to open it over in Ubuntu.
MS must have decided that it's only necessary to have IE know about msnim rather than make it system wide
