Insurance Claim - Question On Vouchers

Hi All, I have just been on the phone to make my first Insurance claim for years on my home policy for a digital camera and some hair straighteners that were stolen from oour room whilst we stayed in a London hotel.

The insurance company has told me that they will provide vouchers (from Comet) to allow us to replace the stolen goods. Of course I don't want this - I want cash.

1) Does anyone know if I can insist on cash or do I have to accept the
vouchers ?

2) Can anyone recommend a home insurance company who do not go in for this unfortunate practice ?

Have you checked your policy wording? It usually contains something along the lines of it is at their option whether to repair, replace or cash settle items. Unfortunatly, most insurance companies now tend to insist on replacing items when ever possible, as it's cheaper for them. With things like cameras, even if you can get them to agree a cash settlement, they will usually deduct any discount they can get from your cash settlement.

You may be able to get them to agree to a cash settlement if you can show then you can get the item for less than their supplier, but then you might get considerably less than the camera is worth.
