Reduction in Business Rates would be a good start. Luckily we get small business rate relief but that didn't stop the rateable value going up every year for the last 15yrs so when they cut the small business rate relief (which they will do) we will get hammered.

BR's are crippling small businesses all over the country and should be abolished and charging people £ thousands a year in rates and provide no services whatsoever for the money is a disgrace.

    Rant over..................for now..

Before I go he should also slap business rates on all BTL properties, they are businesses after all.;)

    Wheres the bottle opener...(hick)

Why would he want to do that as opposed to giving you a reason to spend?

Because if we don't save we will just be in more doodoo further down the line. Does he care, no because he will be on some other gravy train in Brussels probably with a trust fund compounding nicely.

The Government is promoting bad financial habits in people. Not sure why I'm surprised looking at their own habits over the last few years.... :(

Part of the issue is that an accountant prepares the books for the LL. Minimises the tax liability. Ensures full reliefs are claimed. However the amateur LL doesn't put the cash aside in reserve. So if the boiler or double glazing need replacing. There's no money to fund the cost.

    Another soundbite post I think.
Would it be possible for you to back up these ascertations with facts?

Personally, my boilers are services yearly along with the Gas Safety Certificate and is on a maintenance plan, such that any problems can be called on for 24/7 support and repair

Um. Plain stupidity on those that believe BTL is an easy way to riches.

At some point in time. The lack of funds may well come back to haunt them.

BTL is no different to any business. Cashflow is what matters. Without reserves there's nothing to tide them through the bad times.

    Another soundbite.
    Facts please!

    Hmmmmm......

Business rates should be abolished, but you want Business rates to apply to BTL [confused]

If BR's are crippling crippling small businesses, do you believe that BTL should also be crippled similarly and if so, do you think the government would want to do this given they are so reliant on private rentals and don;t want the burdon of providing social homes

Part of my post was tongue in cheek, but please don't try and paint BTL landlords as knights in shining armour saving people from a life of living in cardboard boxes. Tut-tut :naughty:

    Not at all, however.....

I have 3 BTL's. I believe I maintain them very well and they are to a relatively high standard.
I market at a rate which has seen me have 16 days void over the three properties, over the last 6 years.

If my properties were sub standard, I woudn't have the void period I have and tenants would choose alternative options of rental.

Mister "Lifetime spent dealing with Finance" doesn't do facts. Soundbite after soundbite pretending to have a clue....

Absolutely. See his absurd claim on the 'Jeremy Warner on the Budget' thread that:

"By 2010 50% of the workforce were effectively (more if outsourcing is included) employed by the Government"

Then, when provided with official ONS figures (a 20%/80% public/private split) and asked for a source for his figures - despite posting on here several times a day - he hasn't responded.

And here lies the problem, MS1950
That he spouts his fortune cookie one liners on this debate board is harmless.
More worrying is when he pokes his nose into the mortgages, pensions and investment boards, exuding an air of confidence and knowledge towards unknowing posters who come to the board for advice regarding pretty important financial decisions. Scary.
