Cleaning Carpets

I have just moved. And the carpets all need a clean as there is no way we can afford to replace the carpets.

Downstairs is not a problem my mum has a Vax.

Different story upstairs. We have chipboard instead of floorboards. Stand pratice in the late 70's.

So how do I clean the carpets up stairs as I can't use a vax and pump water in to them as it will soak in to the chipboard and warp.

Any ideas.

We found a steam cleaner worked wonders. Can be bought in DIY's for about £30 I think.

But does not that make the carpets wet?

As I said I can't make the carpets wet at all as the chipboard below will warp and that it will not just be new carpets we need. But a whole new floor.
