Planing to Fly to USA

Hi, I am planning to go to USA from end of April. Now the cheapest I find so is through Travelup but reading FAQ they are not covered by ATOL - it says:-

If you purchased your flights with a credit card and the transaction is over £100, then in most cases you will be reimbursed by your card provider. Please check with your bank or financial institution.

Other flights bought on their own (ie not in a package) are not ATOL protected. Please check with your travel insurance company to see whether this will be refunded. You should also check with your travel insurance provider about reimbursement for hotel or car hire bookings you've been unable to use due to airline failure.

I will be paying the ticket with my debit card. Will have the same protection if their is a problem? Can use a credit card but they will charge a 2% fee.

what is the price difference from buying the same flights direct from the airline?

Pay £1 on credit card and the rest on debit card. You'll get full S75 protection that way.

ATOL don't protect any flight only bookings, only flight + car, flight + hotel etc.

Actually ATOL does protect some flight only bookings if the ticket is not issued immediately. Assuming you are booking with a decent airline, it is unlikely they will go bust, and TravelUp appears to have an ATOL licence to sell 14,000 seats a year. If the fare is really much cheaper, my only concern would be an attempt to tell you the seats are gone and sell a higher fare, so check carefully as most agents have fares very close to each other on the transatlantic routes

This is difficult if not impossible to do when you if you are booking online as it asks for the full cost of a flight at the time of booking and there is no facility to split the payment.
