New Resident in UK

Options
Hello All

I am a 34 year old women, and have been living in the UK for 1 year and 2 months.

I have been trying to find a credit card so I can build up my credit history not because I need to borrow money now, but to ensure that should the day come then I would have a history. But every card I find you have to enter 3 years of address history which I for a good reason don't have.

Any ideas as to where I can turn to get a credit card?

Best regards,
The Newbie ;)

Ask the bank you have a current account with.

That said, a CC is not the only way to build your history. A mobile contract, a bank account with overdraft, store cards, catalogue credit accounts do the job too.

Thanks I have already done that. Got my self on my partners account with over draft limit on. Got virgin package in my name.

I still want a cc so things go faster as my plan is to buy a house and I can't do so without a solid record.

You have to be very careful with getting on electoral roll,

When are you able to do this from? I think you have to be a citizen of the UK.

I have an interest here having recently married someone from outside the EU who is now on a 2 year spouse resident permit.

I thought this could not be done until you had gained British citizenship.

Getting anything financial service is a pain for those from outside EU got told by first bank we went to that whilst her visa (marriage one at the time, but after marriage just before we sent forms off for FLR) says no access to public funds she could not have an account as this is what no access to public funds means!

Don't really want to go via the back door (as the OP has with a joint bank account) but will if we have too.

While our banks are staffed with fools it is always going to be an uphill struggle!

I would talk to the bank you have an account with and a financial history with they will probably be the best to help.
I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.

Im sure if people keep voting the Tories I'm sure they'll scrap the British Citizenship altogether and just say all you need is a suit case.

AFAIK Commonwealth and EU citizens can vote too if they are UK residents.

My husband is non EU, was on 2 year spouse visa, then got ILR, now is British and is now on electoral roll.

From the start I made sure he was named on bills, council tax along with myself. He applied for a Vanquis card which he uses and pays off in full every month to strengthen his credit rating.

He has a mobile phone contract in his name.

I have read that these show reliability and will help with applying for future credit / loans / mortgage.

yes, there are certain voting restrictions and differences (I believe Commonwealth citizens can also stand in elections and vote in all elections, unlike EU ones who are restricted to voting only in local and EU elections)
