Hi all was just a wee question on my rights. I bought a shredder from asda about 6 weeks ago and its no longer working and I cant find the recipt. Asda say they wont exchange or refund without a recipt. Are they within the rules or can I insist they should exchange it. Also I paid by card so could I use a bank statment as proof?

Under SoGA, they can ask for proof of purchase but cannot insist upon a receipt. Bank/card statement should be fine although you may run into a few problems if you bought more than 1 item.
However, be nice and polite, give them as many details as you can about the transaction (ie you bought the shredder, teabags and milk around x time on x date) and they may be able to locate the transaction. You keep using that word. You could email head office if a bank statement would be accepted, unholy is correct in that its all you need legally but often floor staff won't have a clue so printing off the email confirming its acceptable could make life much easier0
