Cyprus bank accounts being robbed

Options
Does anyone here remember a poster called The Thrilla or Thriller or similar? He was a prolific poster back last year and he predicted what is happening in Cyprus right now. If I remember right he said one day our bank balances would reduce, without our permission.

I am completely shocked that this can be allowed to happen:eek:

I know that I woke a few minutes ago and heard this on the radio. It is to be discussed in parliament there(and probably approved today)Roughly 10% levy on savings if you have 100,000euros(£86,590)or more and around 6.75% for those upto 100,000euros.

So naturally people are attempting to withdraw cash. It does make you wonder how safe anyone's money is across Europe...even here.

I don't want to really get into the immigration thing and recent worries of the influx or possible people from Europe coming here as it always turns into racism or attacks on people who depend on benefits or whether jobs are taken away from others etc...

But another report on radio the other day showed how the population in Bulgaria are suffering and I looked it up the internet. They are in real trouble too(we hear of Greece, Portugal, Italy, Spain and Ireland)rarely Cyprus/Bulgaria.

So in Bulgaria they have been protesting at the price of electric but it has escalated to other problems such as the cost of food etc...and some people have been so deperate they have set fire to themselves.

So that's 7 member states out of 27 in real trouble. There will be more.

There was a man on here, old style, I think probably one of the Tough threads and he predicted this very thing. I have tried to find it. I found him very insightful then, if a bit off-the-wall (or so I thought then).

When they talked about the economy of the PIIGS - Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Greece and Spain, the "lesser" countries were much less reported, maybe because their loans were further away for repayment, I don't know.

Greece, etc stopped being talked about in mainstream media but it is still there. What I don't understand understand is how they can hope to prop up 5 countries we know are suffering and , as you say Popperwell, Bulgaria now. For me Cyprus was the niggling cough when Greece began their meltdown.

Germany is having their own dramas am sure. Less able, less willing to bail out. No denying they gain much by it staying intact. They worked very very hard for their own success and the design of the Euro aids that.

I so wish I could find the thread The Thrilla was on back then. A mystic meg type and unbelievably accurate for what has just happened in Cyprus now.

Fletch I said that there will be more...to be honest we all know that there is but they are trying to hide the fact and often our own media either does not report what is happening or puts a spin on it. I hate to say that for a number of reasons but mainly because that suggests a conspiracy.

Its like yesterday, whether people agree with the new austere measures being brought in, approx 50 protests were held around the country against the bedroom tax in the UK but mostly ignored by the press and media.

On MSE elsewhere another poster has been giving an insightful commentary on what is happening in Greece not heard elsewhere...its frightening.

I completely agree Popperwell. We get told what THEY want us to know!! China too has an uprising coming. Their new (I think) Defence Minister has hired more soldiers just at the same time property tax is about to shoot up for anyone selling property in China!!

Money is the root and the route of all evil. I have followed the Jimmy Savile thing too and Anders always said "follow the money" to get the answers!!

I think we all need to read our terms and conditions of our bank accounts. It too easy to just TAKE it surely? Those people would have paid tax on the money at the point of earning it, like UK service personnel.

    Will it happen here?

Exactly! The timing was immaculate. Banks shut for an extra day to remove the monies.

This has completely shocked me I tell you. Cyprus is not a corrupt country. But surely, this move is morally corrupt?

A run on the Cyprus banks is fruitless because they have done it already. They have taken it! Why do our countries continue to allow this reverse Robin Hood?

I saw bits and peices on twitter from c4news economics editor.
newsnights pretty good at reporting greece too.

But agree they only report when nothing better comes along.

I used to get free subscription to weekly magazine/newspaper called this week was fab read as reported all sorts news from round the world never heard of.

I hate the way they report very little news over here never hear much about oz or canada.if sky news reported more news rather than repeat be much better.

Cyprus confuses me a bit as they independent country of greece had no idea they were in the euro as last time went was 97 and they had cypriot pound also are they cobined as there was greek side and turkish and think turkeys economys doing ok out of the eu yet they randomly wanted to join since the 1970s.

The news reported lots of russion investors in cyprus never considered it a good off shore compared to others but guess it must be.
The recent dodgy dutch horse meat trader had links financially with cyprus.

If we compare cyprus with say iceland who just let banks go to wall and guranteed nothing and are now seeing some growth.

It is scary they can decide this and do a deal.
I have no doubt it could happen anywhere in europe.

lets face it we already been fleeced in other ways here.

The banking crisis-apparently hours away from atm not giving cash.
we give them bailout one with no conditions set.
    they dont lend
    they make loads people redundant
    give them 2nd bailout
they continue with losses, bad behaviour and paying bonuses.

We sold nothern rock at a loss.

I like idea of everyone actually having physcial shares in state owned banks rbs /Lloys which is mess as forced merger with hbos that shouldent have happened.

    I remember thrilla.
dident realise bulgaria bad guess media scared to say that as then they will convinnce themselves they all want to come here amazes me as out of all euro countries I wouldent choose uk its so expensive and rubbish weather find the sun improves my mood always loved the greek islands.

Its a mess they should have dismantled the euro rather than all these bailouts to prop it up bit better cant help feel greek people be better off with own currency and outside the euro rather than austerity they had now. Also confused as thourght new socialist party new dawn wouldent implement austerity. They keep drip feeding greece pocket money like its a child. Most if it i think from imf though not europe itself.

I don't profess to know much about the euro crisis. Of Greece I do know the people who have been paid to be in charge have done a shockingly bad job. Imagine paying State money to pensioners who were long dead!! The largest proportion of their people are employed by the State, little tax going in to pay for it!! It's a no brainer.

How do these countries get away with not paying their taxes? In Britain they are right there itch their hands out when I earn money:mad:

I am really struggling with the concept of simply removing people's money just because they have the keys. Could it happen here? Different language, better weather but how different is Cyprus o uk?
