London - Congestion Charge & Blue Badge Holders

Checking the links on the TfL website, I just want to validate that Blue Badge holders do not have to pay the Congestion Charge if driving within the charging zone on a Sunday, and don't have to register if this is the only day you plan to be in 'the zone'. Thanks.

If the car has a disability exempt tax disc there is no congestion charges in London at any time.

    From tfl.gov.uk website
    Exemptions

You don't have to pay the Congestion Charge or register with us if the vehicle is recorded at the DVLA in one of these categories:

Two-wheeled motorbikes (and sidecars), and mopeds
Emergency service vehicles, such as ambulances and fire engines, which have a taxation class of 'Ambulance' or 'Fire engine'
NHS vehicles that are exempt from road tax
Vehicles used by disabled people that are exempt from road tax and have a 'disabled' taxation class
Vehicles for more than one disabled person (for example Dial-A-Ride) exempt from road tax and have a 'disabled' taxation class

As a blue-badge holder, I thought I had to pay £10 to register for 100% discount on congestion charge. However on seeing your post I am wondering if having a disability exempt tax disc means that I do not have to pay the £10 to register for no congestion charge - does anyone know the answer to this? Also, can anyone tell me how they know that I am exempt from paying road tax and therefore do not have to pay the congestion charge.

Big brother knows more than you think about you. And some of the time it goes in your favour.

Any vehicle that displays a 'Disabled' Tax Disc does not have to pay the congestion charge or pre -register and pay the £10.00 (that is for Blue Badge holders not in a Disabled Taxed Car).

As for how do the cameras know - All down to automatic number plate recognition which is linked to the DVLA database which stores details of the taxation class of vehicles.

  • Thank you people.

I will post a new thread about congestion charging traps shortly.
