Can I install ADSL modem yet?

Options
Hey guys

Im currently on dial-up and have signed up for ADSL,this afternoon the ADSL modem arrived. What I want to know is can I install the ADSL modem now so its ready for when BT convert my line or turn it on whatever they have to do(which should be in a few days/week).Obviously I still keep my existing modem and ISP as my main ones in Internet Options-Connections,and if I do so will it erase my existing modem and ISP from my laptop?(i say existing modem because I'm using a USB modem as the one in my lappy does not work)Or do I have to wait until I get the email from the ADSL provider to say I'm ready to go and then install it?
Thanks in advance

You may already have broadband enabled, so plug it in and try. It wont do any harm. Your modem settings will still be there. Some ISp providers dont tell you that they have connected you to Broadband.
Hope that is of some help.

Plug it in to the computer to power it up and plug the ADSL line into the ADSL house socket. See if the modem sync's with the exchange. If it syncs and you have a username and pwd your all ready to go.

    hi
    thanks for the quick reply.
I only signed up on Tuesday to Pipex, they say they have to do a check on my line,or get BT to do it and turn it on or something, then they will email me when I'm ready to go.They've sent me all my log on details and passwords with the modem this afternoon, would it be a bit soon to try yet and what are the chances of it already being on? also they only sent me 2 filters so ive gotta get some more,is it ok to test it with just the one filter plugged in?

Nildram took about 2-3weeks to get BT to hook-me-up me on when I was on ADSL.

I think its all about luck, if there is an engineer in your local exchange working on something else he may do it as he is there. My experience with BT is bad, BT take yonks to get in gear.

Try it with one filter, it wont harm anything.

I'm with Pipex, I'm pretty sure they'll email you when BT tell them the line has been enabled.

Personally, I would wait until you've got confirmation that your phone line has been changed over to broadband before trying to logon to it. I thought that there may be a possibility of damage to your ADSL modem if you set it up before your line has been converted over.

I found this on the official PIPEX ADSL website:

Within the following 2-7 working days, a BT engineer will perform a survey on the telephone line you have nominated for use with ADSL to ensure it is of a sufficient quality and within the maximum distance. BT will also check that you do not have any incompatible services attached to the ADSL telephone line.
If the survey provides information that ADSL cannot be provided on your telephone line, we will advise you of the reasons of failure by letter.
Once the survey has been completed, your telephone line will be converted to ADSL and an email will be sent to you, advising you of the Activation date.
From this date you will be able to connect the ADSL equipment and start using your new PIPEX Home Broadband service. We will also notify you in writing that your ADSL service is available for use. This will be sent by 1st class post.
      Please call me 'Kazza'.

Infact to back my experience with BT....

I had Nildram ADSL at my parents home (3yrs ago) moved out nrly 2yrs ago and my parents still have ADSL for free.

Looks like communication between ISP's and BT is minimal.

.....oh, maybe my experience with BT is good then :p

      thanks you guys

i just logged onto Pipex and checked my order status and there was this message:-
BT have confirmed to us that your line should be enabled during 21/04/2005. A precise installation time during the day cannot be guaranteed but work will normally be completed by the end of the business day.

So im guessing that I should be OK to try it after Thursday

I had a message just like yours, but Id already been connected before then, its entirely up to you but when I swapped ISPs I checked every day with the adsl modem to see if my line had been 'swapped' with no ill affect to either my computer or adsl router.

PS it is ok to check your line with one filter, in fact you can just have one filter in all the time as long as you don't need to use the other telephone points with a telephone .

Try going to this site it may explain a few things it helped me a lot when I was starting out. WWW.ADSLGUIDE.ORG.UK

      Good Luck
