Exchange & Completion - Typical time in between...

Hello,
Looking for some advice on a situation I am now faced with.
After being pushed and pushed by the sellers to exchange as quickly as possible, I went to the solicitors on Friday to sign all paperwork.
My solicitors have told me that we can exchange on Thursday coming, but vendors want to complete on the 17th of April.
This means a gap of a month between exchange and completion. They had a previous house sale fall through and already left a deposit with the removal company, and unless they use this one company they will loose their deposit.
I have told them that I want to complete as soon as possible as I have to move out of my current house in 5-6 weeks time and I need to fit new carpets and decorate the new house before I move in.
Now what I have said to estate agents is that I am happy for them to leave their stuff in the house after completion as I wont be immediately moving in, only decorating.
Am I being unreasonable?
It's worth adding that the current house isn't being lived in, they moved out long ago and only thing in the house is a TV, dining table and chairs and some garden furniture.

Completion is a compromise between the different parties.
You have to try to work it out between you, and the two solicitors of course. Once you agree, then you can exchange.I am a mortgage broker. Well I have said to the EA that if they can't arrange removals until 17th April then ill complete and exchange on Thursday (Same time) and then I can decorate and get carpets sorted, and they can keep the slot with removal company.0 -
Our vendor wanted 2 weeks to find somewhere to rent. That gave us more than enough time to pack and arrange removals.0

What annoys me is the EA has been on the phone every other day chasing me, and solicitors to get Exchange done ASAP and then find out they want another 4 weeks to complete!jbainbridge wrote: »Our vendor wanted 2 weeks to find somewhere to rent. In a bit of a "Catch mate" scenario as they wont arrange removals until exchange has taken place, but with a pregnant girlfriend and kids I dont want the hastle of moving into the house in 4 weeks time only then having to move everything around to get carpet laid, removed, rooms decorated, etc!0 -
The norm is anywhere between between two weeks and two months. How long is a piece of string?0
