I'm awful on the phone, when anxious I start to stutter. I can handle difficult callers at my work place but when it's me, I just talk guff.

In that case, send a letter.

Also request they remove your phone number and deal in writing only.

Sometimes takes a while to sort, best start now. Explain your reasons if you like, anxiety etc.

I would do this for all creditors.

LOL, even better! The harder this is the more confident you'll feel after doing it :) obviously this is just MY feeling on the matter but others would just leave it to SC :)

If it helps, write a script leaving spaces for their responses to you to make notes such as names and "significant" comments and stick to the script...

All you are doing is phoning to tell them you are entering into a DMP with SC and passing on the DMP ref. so you could (if you're really struggling) just say sorry to everything they say to you and repeat the ref. again and say thanks then hang up :)

The whole thing should be a couple of minutes at the very most :)

And to think MB I've got myself into such a hideous state that I just got off the phone to the Samaritans (never done that) all because I'm fretting over ruddy catalogues. I'm normally a rational and strong person and if I told you what I did for a job you would be surprised that I feel this way and can't cope.

    I'm just catastrophising aren't I and I've hijacked somebody else's thread (sorry)

I know its hard to do, but try not to worry.

You have taken a huge step in contacting stepchange. It will all settle down soon.

You have to remember, it's not a criminal offence to be in debt, these things happen, and what creditors threaten versus what a court can grant them (worst case) will be hugely in your favour.

    You will be fine.

This forum and the people who post are literally life savers. Hopefully I will pick myself in a few weeks time and shrug my shoulders at Very :)

  • I have 3 accounts with the various shop direct companies and owe approx £4K. I set up a DMP with stepchange and havent been hassled by calls from NDR or shop direct.

They send me my statement as normal each month and apply the payments with no issues. 2 have frozen the interest, the 3rd account hasnt though?! Unsure why.

None of the account have defaulted either as of yet, all on credit file as late payment.

Thank you for the reassurance Onthelongroad. I am going to write to each creditor outlining some details about how I got into this bother. I don't expect that they will care but I'm just doing it out of courtesy and letting them know that SC will be in touch shortly. Just hope they accept my offer.
