E.ON Gas Bill Query
Hi all,
this is my first post here so hello! Hoping you can help me with a quick bit of advice... I recently moved to a new flat so closed my dual fuel balance with E.On after being with them for 6 months. I was paying a direct debit of £85pcm for a 2 bed tenement flat in Glasgow. I live with my partner... we are only really in during evenings and weekends, and have been very diligent with consumption. I received a final closing bill from the lovely people at E.ON, stating I still owed them £550, mostly down to gas consumption.
Now, I don't mind paying it if I've truly used as much energy as they say, but I'm just looking for some perspective.
The bill states I used 5000kwh between October 23 and Jan 10 (not unreasonable), but the meter seems to suggest I used a spectacular 8300kwh between Jan 10 and March 7 when we closed the account.
This seems rather a lot given that during that time our roof in the kitchen had come in so we couldn't use the gas hob! Does this seem like a misreading to you, or is this within the realms of possibility. Eon asked me to provide them with 3 readings a day for a week to check the meter, but sadly that's not possible as I don't live there anymore!

Your hob is not going to make any significant difference, it really won 't use much gas at all for the short time it is in use. Big energy guzzlers are heating and hot water (plus laundry and tumble dryers for electric). If the roof came in you probably had drafts or worse insulation? Therefore you may have used more heat to maintain the same temperature.
Did you supply regular readings up to that point? How well insulated was the property, how many hours per day was the heating on and at what room temperature? Was the Jan 10 reading an estimate or actual? It's possible an estimate was too low so you played catch up on the second bill.
Most people are only out at work about a quarter of the week, so you are potentially home for around three quarters.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -
Ah now there is a good point. It's likely the January reading was an estimate. A gentleman from G4S did appear to take readings in November but didn't appear to know his meter from his elbow. My initial reaction was that almost 200kwh a day seemed insane, but given that should probably be averaged over the 6 months that doesn't seem so mad.
I'll be savvier in future and provide regular readings online...0 -
It really is well worth reading the meters yourself and submitting readings regularly. Might be different in Scotland but down here the suppliers only have to read the meters every two years :eek: this means it is possible to get very behind or very ahead with poor estimates.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0

Agree with Fire Fox, it looks like the previous gas bill was estimated so the final bill is what we call a 'catch up' bill where we have now billed to actual readings.
This can make the bill look like you have used a lot of energy in a short space of time, but really it's because the previous bills were underestimated.
I understand that's a lot to pay in one go, if it would help just ask us to set up a payment arrangement to clear it over a few months.
