If I were to take a company I used to be a contractor for to court, I know they cannot recover their costs win or lose, but can I recover my costs from them?

recovery of costs is limited....court fees, witness expenses can be reclaimed but legal fees are very limited. Same rules apply to both sides.0

Thanks. So if I am representing myself I should be able to recover the cost of filing the claim and the cost of actually having a hearing etc?0

yep, plus any costs for you (and any other witnesses) being there.
Similarly, if you lose then the other side will get their witness costs from you.0
